Anodising company Alumet invests 12 million in new anodising line

Today, owner Remco Baartmans and several employees will drive the first pile into the ground of Alumet BV’s new building. ‘This expansion is a long-desired wish to continue meeting the growing demand for our product’, says Remco Baartmans. ‘With more capacity and a fully automated process, we will accelerate the delivery time and increase the quality.’

More than 50 years ago, Alumet moved into the building on Nieuwe Donk in Etten-Leur. From that moment on, the company changed and grew. Alumet first started out anodising aluminium combs, but after several successful years the company focused its business more and more on facade construction. ‘We see the demand for high-quality anodising increasing every year. The architect has rediscovered anodising and we responded to that in 2014 by investing in new colours and techniques. But we had not predicted just how much the demand would increase at the national and global level.’ The new modern factory will ensure faster delivery times and, more importantly, even better quality. ‘We are expanding our colour palette once more. Thanks to the new line we are going to produce more shades of grey and brown and a unique clear gloss: bright anodising’, says Remco.

New logistics concept
The delivery time for colour anodising is currently 10 working days. The modern building and the new installation will provide the possibility to reduce this to five working days. ‘In 2020 we are going to work according to the concept Now-and-Next’, says Frans Tijs, Production Leader. ‘Each order will be prepared in one go and then go into production as a whole. While the first order is being anodised, we will already be preparing the second order.’ This concept plus the capacity of the line of three million a year will guarantee a delivery time of five working days.

Improved process
The new system will also mark a new era in the field of quality. The anodising line is fully automated and controlled by computers. During the preparation phase, Alumet labels and scans all products. During and after anodising, Alumet assesses the colour of each product. The aim is to deliver a flawless product to our customers according to the six sigma principle.

Making the process ecological has been incorporated into the design of the new anodising line. ‘We are going to isolate the series of baths and capture the residual heat which will then be reused for heating the baths,’ says Coen Bakker, Head of Technical Services. ‘This is one of the many adjustments that we are implementing to reduce our ecological footprint.’

New working environment
The contractor company Valeres is responsible for the design of the new building. The hall consists of two parts. One side will house the anodising line and the other side will have space for work preparation and packaging of the material. This will ensure a safe, clean and pleasant working environment for all employees. The total surface comprises a 10,000 m² production hall and 850 m² office space. The facade of the office will have Alucobond composite panels. Installing them unevenly will give the office a dynamic appearance. The panels will, of course, be anodised in our own colour. To bring more life into the facade it will partly be fitted with Panelox panels (a double anodised panel with an etched pattern).
